I went to go check out an MB ML400 this morning. It was over an hours drive from my house. They knew that. I knew that. We all knew that.

I spoke to them TWICE this morning before I left, both sides confirming I was coming. Because, you know, it was far and there would probably be traffic.

As expected, I hit traffic in NY, and it took almost two hours to get there. First bad sign: the truck was boxed in by two cars. Sure enough, I go inside and the woman says “The battery is dead, we ordered a new one this morning.” I just sigh, thinking that maybe someone would have the decency to call me and let me know before I drove out there. But no.

Meanwhile, they weren’t really apologetic about it....saying, you can still go look at it. Really? I can go LOOK at it? Can I TOUCH it, too???? YAYY!!!!! So what the hell, I’m here, might as well go LOOK at it. And I did. Usual curb rash on the 20" AMG wheels, back bumper slightly scratched and chrome trim bent from small, previously disclosed accident. I was even able to get INTO the vehicle! Yay. All looks to be in very good shape but that MEANS NOTHING unless I can see how many lights are on the German, out-of-warranty Christmas Tree on the dash. With DISTRONIC sensors and Parking A ssist and blah-dee-blah options, I was concerned about all the sensors, among a few other things, that you find out WHEN YOU CAN (or can’t) start the damn car. Sigh.

At this point I think....hmmm....you’re not an MB dealer, but can’t you get a fucking battery in under an hour? I mean, it’s probably worth it FOR ME to go get a battery so I can drive the thing and not have to come back. But I digress.

I ask if we an at least jump it, so I can hear it start. I figure a jump-started test drive was out of the question based on how dead (DEAD) the battery was. But the service guy said no, he wasn’t risking a jump due to electronics, etc.

So we stared at the car.

We s tared at the Bi-Turbo V6 engine.

We s tared at each other.

Kinja'd!!!

Eerily silent Bi-Turbo V6. Its LOOKS nice. ARRRGHHHHH.

After a few moments of silence, s he asked me “Do you like it? It was owned by a doctor!!! If you like it we can do the paperwork and you can come back tomorrow and we’ll have a new battery and temporary tags and you can drive it home! ”

(S he actually said those things. Standing next to a truck that didn’t start )

That’s when I kind of lost it. It could have been owned by JERRY FUCKING SEINFELD but what the fuck difference does it make? It’s a fucking Matchbox car without a battery!!! It’s gonna take me another 90 minutes to get home!!! FUCK!!! She follows that up with “Two people are coming to look at it this afternoon” to which I said “Well, maybe it will have a battery by then and they can drive it. Let me know how they like it!!!!”

Arrgghhh. I’ll spare you the rest of the story.

Bonus picture of the Amityville Horror house, which was nearby. (O riginal crime scene house, with different windows than when the murders happened. Really nice house in a nice neighborhood)

Once owned by Gerri Seinfeld.

Seriously, sounds like one crappy experience.

You’re dealing with a shitty car dealer..what do you expect, empathy?  I guess since they didn’t feel sorry at all for having you come out to look at a non-running car, it would have been too much to ask them to at least give you gas money or buy your dinner.  They deserve any abuse you can dish out on them.

I think that in their mind they realized they made a huge mistake and just decided to “fuck it”

It sounds like a terrible place, don’t buy anything from them.

Just take your Monster Truck and offer to “bump start” it...

Did you actually try to start it? Or did you take their word for it? Because this doesn’t sound like a place that should be trusted...

I’d normally agree. However, on the advice of a friend who was from the area , I decided to try and salvage the afternoon and went to All-American Burger for lunch after I saw the Amity house. The burgers and fries did not dis ap point.

Also, Google got me home in just about an hour, which was a miracle.

I did. I think the battery was removed...because it was dead-dead. (Battery compartment is under passenger seat, so I could not confirm). Nothing, not even a click . Not even sure how they locked or opened it (assuming a portable battery).

What’s crazy is that two different people I know have dealt with them (new Porsche and CPO VW) and reviews are good.

Then again, I was looking at a used Mercedes, so I got stuck with the used-car-lot crew, and VW technicians that clearly didn’t give a rats ass.

A shame, because it was in pretty good condition and had low miles and in the colors I wanted, which is why I suckered myself into driving all the way there.

I did toy with leaving my very dirty, very old Touareg in the lot, parked so I was blocking in two new Audi’s and a GTI. But the Uber home would have been $130, as would the Uber back.

But I did smile when I thought about that!

Yeah that place is good. Far from me though since I'm in the North shore. Well worth the trip though!

I realize this could have happened anywhere, but there's a reason people in general hate dealerships.  Because of garbage like this.

Is that a photo of the actual ML you looked at? It doesn’t have distronic.

Mercedes with distronic cruise control have a plastic shield on the grille in front of the sensor. For cars with the big badge in the grille , a shield with a picture of the grille replaces normal grille badge shown in that photo.

You are c orrect...this one had everything but.

Active Park assist, Blind Spot assist, Lane Recognition, Collision Warning/Active Break (you can see the sensor in the bottom of the pic).

There’s an ML400 in NJ w/Distronic Plus. Too many VINs!

That’s... absurd.

Also if they had the dead battery out and had a new one on the way, could they not just trickle charge the bad battery? wtf.
